NVC- what will you see in our video?

Costume

We really like this image as we think it shows exactly what we are looking for our actress to look like. we really like the the white flowy dress as well as the feather head piece. also the make up shot above it we really like the bold eyes as well as the beauty mark.

  • Posture and gesture

As one of our main inspirations is florence and the machine we want to take some of her dance moves and her persona of how she can be quite awkward. Her gesture will be friendly in the dance scenes as we want it to look to the audience as if there is plenty of fun and at 1 minute 30 seconds we want her directly looking in to the camera.

  • facial expressions.

We looked into facial expressions within our genre and they seem to be quite pouty and cheeky, there's a heavy amount of eye contact. in our video whenever there is a performance section we want our actress to have a very animated face and have lots of contact with the camera.

  • Use of space

we think that these two shots show the use of space really well, as we are also using dancers we think that this  demonstrates how we could go about it really well and also shows how to use the maximum amount of space as well.  in our video in the dance scenes and chorus's we are going to have less close ups and more shots like this to show exactly what is going on.

  • Voice

The beat changes in our song

Throughout our song some of the beat changes are very repetitive we found the first bat change happens at
0:15 - a stronger beat comes in, we feel at this point that our actress will come to life more.

we then found that whenever the lyrics "my life is a play" are said the is a drumming beat which comes in this first happens at 0:46

Then at 1:02 the track speeds up and a massively faster beat comes in. we think that at this point our shot types will change dramatically.

at 2:35 there is a violin section which we think is really important that we focus on as its a dramatic change in the song

then finally at 3:17 the beat drops off.

Advanced portfolio research:textual analysis (technical codes)

The music video i have analysed is Florence and the machine 'spectrum'
Camera:
Visuals and Music- At the start the camera starts at a long shot this is the establishing shot creating the atmosphere and introducing us this automatically grabs the attention of the audience. throughout there are many close up of the dancers asif its one big moshpit, i think this is done to make you want to buy the song because the directors want you to buy the song because they want you to link it to the song and automatically think of that, due to the song being quite upbeat the dance scenes fit in well. the camera tends to change beat on the camera from performance and narrative which amkes the video much more tighter.

Visuals and Lyrics-At the opening scene to the video, it starts off at a long shot which establishes the scene, they lyrics says 'cold and we were clear' i think this is interesting as the visuals seem to match the lyrics as they use blue and white lighting to convey this to the audience. Also Florence has light shining from below and all her lyrics seem to match the fact of it could be to do with evolution and the beginning of the world and how people are born etc. this contrasts with the other lyrics 'till we let the spectrum in' us as an audience think that because it starts off quite dull hearing the lyrics it will all of a sudden kick in. on the lyrics 'we are shining' they use lighting behind her face to twinkle as if she was shining. the use of camera is done very wsely as there are many close ups on florence and then long shots to show the on goings around, i think this has been done because when selling the song they want you to see and be interested by use of camera as it makes the narrative performance interesting.

Form and Structure- In this music video i think that it is very obvious that is a music video because the use of camera fits in with the song because when the beat fastens up the camera is quite choppy and short compared to the slower beats where it pans and fades in and out of clips, i like the fact it does this as it gets a bigger reaction from the audience catching their attention more.i think this could be used to sell the product because the more interesting and appealing the music video is the more easy it is for the product to sell.

Genre-
the choreography fits this genre well as there is a mix such as indie, pop, rock, soul. as there is a mixture of genres florence3 and the machine has to include different sorts of things for example the performance syncing, this was done very well due to it fits in with the lyrics and this is done via syncing the camera and lyrics together.

mise- en-scene:

visuals and music- in the music video there are instrumental sections using instruments like the harp and this is just focusing on the setting and colours. this has worked well as in one scene they have used the colour gold on most of the costume which shows the richness and happiness  and very bright lighting which ties in with the music as it would make a viewer very happy but the director has also been clever to add a contrast of a ballet scene where the colour blue has been used as the beat has changed meaning that there is a clear contrast between the two scenes creating a split story. In this music video i think it shows florence and the machines fans and her viewers what she is like as the upbeat music is shown through dance scenes and the calmer music has a performance based section of her which shows how versatile she is.

visuals and lyrics- In the music video there are many links i think between the lyrics for example 'cold and clear' and there are many lighting effects creating this cold effect as a build up as to when the music kicks in. As the setting in one scene of the music is buildings about the same size as florence and the machine and she says the lyrics'say my name, and every colour illuminates, we are shining, and we will never be the same again' this is said whilst Florence is stood by some buildings, the buildings seem to be the same size as her, this could mean that now she is famous she stands out and is noticed. when watching this video people could feel quite intimidated because on lyrics such as 'when we come for you' the camera goes on to a group of ballet dancers doing a dance in unison which is quite tribal like.

form and structure- Throughout the music video it is very obvious through the mise en scene that it is a music video because the costumes are all the same and when they do dances they are done in unison. this is also a contrast from florence herself doing a performance, there has to be a balance between the two as the viewers and fans will get a gratification of seeing her singing but as it has another slight narrative/performance it keeps it interesting.

Genre- I think the location fits in with the mise en scene for this genre very well because they aren't boring or normal, they have a lot of lighting and imaginative costumes to bring it to life as if its some sort of fairy tail which is what the audience for this genre of music prefer.

Editing:
visuals and music-
The editing goes very well with the music, because as the music fades out from one shot it might jump cut in to another this all depends on the music, this is very relate-able to the song making it likable.

visuals and lyrics- With this video on each of the lyrics there will be a jump cut so it seems neat so from 'say my' to 'name' there will be a cut  and this is relates to the song as the quicker the shots get the quicker they jump. at the beginning of the music video the first shot is around 40 second long this is a big comparison compared to the rest of the video which the average shot is around 7 seconds, his is because the lyrics have quite a lot to say, there is a lot to be changed.

genre- As the music video has a few genres i think they have structured it to be a mix of narrative and performance for all audiences, and made it very interesting through the use of editing.

overall i would say there is a 20% narrative, 50% performance and 30% conceptual.i think that the idea for this music video has come from the lyrics and the idea that the directors and Florence wanted for the video was that it was a rainbow affect and every colour had an image and it was performed as a 'controlled khaos' with tragedy and triumph.the use of lighting and effort for this video is very typical for the mixture of genres together which appeals to a wider audience.

Lyrics

Millions of girls float on their one quote
Living on their last hope, on their last hope
I live my life inside a dream
Only waking when I sleep
I would sell my sorry soul, if I could have it all

My life is a play, is a play, is a play
My life is a play, is a play, is a play
Yeah I've been living in the state of dreaming
living in a make-believe land
living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming
M
All I really want is to be wonderful
People in this town they, they can be so cruel
I live my life inside a dream,
only waking when I sleep
If I could sell my sorry soul, I would have it all

My life is a play, is a play, is a play
My life is a play, is a play, is a play
Yeah I've been living in the state of dreaming
living in a make-believe land
living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming

If only you knew my dear,
How I live my life in fear
If only you knew my dear,
How I know my time is near

Yeah I've been living in the state of dreaming
living in a make-believe land
living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming
living in the state of dreaming
living in a make-believe land
living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming

My life is a play, is a play, is a play

These are the lyrics to our song, 'State of Dreaming'. We thought this song would be suitable for us to make a music video to because we wanted to create a fantasy/dream world in our video and the lyrics suit this idea. For example, phrases such as 'make-believe land' and 'life inside a dream'.

Feedback from pitch

We believe that it will be hard to create the 'magic fantasy' effect without any funding, however widening the target audience is a good idea, and if shot well could be achievable.

We like the idea it seems achievable but i think you need to make clear the the dream from the real life part and also make sure you know where you're going to film.

Also, you have a good idea, which implements the themes of performance, and conceptual videos, however, we are unsure what the full narrative is.

We thought your idea was good, perhaps you should look at 'the wizard of Oz' for inspiration?
:)

i thought it was a very original idea and should work well.

need to be careful if you wanted to make it conceptual, we didn't understand if thats what you wanted to do. we really like the song though and think if you plan it well it will look super cool :D xx

Response to Feedback:

overall they thought it was a good idea, but really we needed to clarify the actual narrative. when filming we need to make sure that the audience can tell certain aspects of our filming is a 'dream world'.

teachers response:

what we need to include within the lyrics and we have many beat changes so we need to use this to our advantage.

Inspirations

This is Oh Lands music video for 'White Nights'. When we heard this song we thought it would be perfect for our idea, however it already has a music video.

Previous Music Videos by Marina and the Diamonds

These are some of Marina and the Diamond's newest music videos, all taken from her second studio album. From looking at these videos you can tell the type of artist she is and the genre of music. She is an indie/pop artist meaning she is different from mainstream pop artists in the charts today. As well as her music being different to that of mainstream artists, her style is also different, with her having a very vintage but feminine style.

In her music videos, there are many shots of her lip-syncing to the camera and her actions usually reflect the lyrics of the song. For example, in the Primadonna video, the lyrics say 'take a picture' and there are various shots of her posing as though taking part in a photoshot. The shots are never any longer than about 5 seconds unless establishing something very important within the video. The editing is fast-paced to keep up with the beat of the song. The shots are taken from many different angles such as extreme close-ups, wide shots and birds eye view. The movement of the camera also varies, for example, tracking is used in the Primadonna video when she is dancing around the house.

You can recognise her vintage style from the Mise-en-scene used, not only costume but also location and props. Especially in the Primadonna video, her costumes are unique and not the usual thing which you would see a young girl wearing today, showing her indie nature. The disnictive feature which would make the audience recognise that this is Marina, is the love heart she always has on her face slightly to the side of her left eye, done using make-up. The house itself is also old-fashioned and holds many vintage items such as the chandelier, the push-bike and the furniture. The visuals in this video also emphasise the vintage theme as many different effects are used such as black and white and sepia, showing the contrast to the normal colour of the shots.

Marina's music videos are mainly a mixture of performance and narrative. The narrative usually matches the lyrics to the song, for example in her video for Power and Control, she has tied the male up to suggest that she is in the position of power. In some videos she has dancers in the background, which we are also going to use in our music video. In the radioactive video the actors wear animal masks which is also part of our idea for our video.

Marina has been compared to Florence and the Machine and you can see the similarites from their music videos and genre of music. Their style is similar in the sense that the are btoh indie and vintage. The Florence and the Machine video which is posted below is in the form of narrative and performance, being set in older times showing her vintage style. Her clothing is very old-fashioned and unique but also glamorous.

Conventions of genre:
Marina does not appeal to just one group of people, her target audience is quite wide-spread therefore the conventions of the genre as also wide-spread. However in her videos, bright colours are used and editing effects have been used a lot to create the vintage effect. Costume and props are very important and are unusual and different to what mainstream pop artists would wear. Many close-up shots are used to emphasise the props used and to show the artist themselves. The cutting of the shots matches the tempo of the music, and so is usually quite fast with indie/pop music.

Our music video will be different to usual pop videos, we plan on giving it an indie edge to emphasise the genre. The audience will be able to tell the genre of our music video as we will use vintage props and costumes. We plan to film mainly in a woods as we think this will suit the lyrics and style of song. Oh Land's music video for White Nights helped to inspire us with our ideas, as they have also used animal masks and is shot in a woods.

Postmodernism

In today's media lesson we watched numerous music videos representing postmodernism. Postmodernism is ideas and concepts which have been re-used in music videos, the ideas are not original, but have been developed from previous concepts.

Generic Hybridisation is when two media products are linked, for example, in REM's music video for 'Bad Day' the audience can tell they are watching a music video but a news programme has been incorporated into the video, as you can see in the video below.

Intertextualityis when a music video makes a specific reference to other media products. For example, in Eminem's music video 'Without Me' he has many scenes representing existing media products, such as E News, a comic strip and batman.

Self reflexivity is when there are references to the fact that it is a media product being made. The audience are conscious that they're watching a music video. An example of this is Snow Patrol's video 'Called Out in the Dark'.

Juxtaposition/bricolage is when contrasting images are put together in the music video to create an effect. This is shown in The Cure's video 'Wrong Number'.

Hyperreality is when the narrative of a music video is an exaggeration of real life. It is in a real setting but the actions are not real. Paramore's 'Brick by Boring Brick' music video shows this. The young girl is in a fairy-tale land as stated by the lyrics.

Target audience for Marina and the diamonds

Marina and the diamonds is a welsh indie/pop artist who's stage name is sprung from her full name which is Marina Lambrini Diamandis. She rose to fame after reaching number two on the BBC Sound of 2010 poll list, coming second to Ellie Goulding. we have chosen a marina an dthe

Target audience

We think that our target audience is something that we really focus on as its important that they like our video and it appeals to them.  when making our video we need to make sure that we include things that are typical within this genre. Below we have looked at different bands and types of artists so that we could see how this effected there videos.

BLUR.

Above is two videos for Blur "Theres no other way" the top video is the english version of the song and you can see that they are very different as the lower one which is for the us is a lot more performance based. each video appeals to different audiences.

KAISER CHEIFS.

In this video a different type of  family is shown as it is of a lower class than in the blur video and its portraying him being nervous about his potential future life. this will appeal massively to the target audience as it shows the typical worries of a young adult man and rebelling against that.

This video although different to the other one it would still appeal to the same type of target audience. it is again set on a council estate and doesn't show much wealth again it shows the band and actors rebelling against the norm and the performance side is very similar. The band are inside an old bar, almost hiding away from the children as they are known to cause trouble however the children challenge these stereotypes as all they do is dance and don't cause any trouble.

First Post

Were working together this year we have chosen to make a music video for Marina and the Diamonds album track 'State of Dreaming'. We chose this song because we wanted our video to be about a 'dream land' where the main persona wakes up in a woods surrounded by people in animal masks. These will be dancers and they will end up having a party together. We thought this song would go well with this idea because it is called 'State of Dreaming' and so reflects the idea that she is dreaming.
